The dedicated literature atributes to the architect only the western wing of this high school. The clensed decorations hint towards a late Neoromanian style, although, if not for the rope-motif frames of  the second floor windows in the corner tower or for the blind niches in the first floor window cartouches, we would have come to the conclusion that it has an Eclectic architecture. These details and its’ massiveness, owed in part to the building type (educational), make up, however, for the Neoromanian signature. The architect has the character strength to continue the existing building in such a manner, that we can not suspect it was built in two different stages. The rhythm of the facade, accomplished by creating three window groups, speculates the length of the wing along Calea Şerban Vodă, lending it elegance and a homogeneity of the built front.

02. Biserica Sfânta Treime Ghencea

Sfânta Treime Ghencea Church
1927 Calea 13 Septembrie 211

The plans of this church are signed by architect Virginia ANDREESCU HARET and her colleague, architect Jean POMPILIAN (1872-1938), and it’s construction period span from 1927 untill 1934.
Built with a mixt masonry and reinforced concrete structure, the church is defined by the volume and facades imagined within the lines of an elegant and slender late Neoromanian style. The destinations of the inner spaces are easily recognised within the exterior volume: the tall exonarthex, marked by two small steeples; the narthex with its buttresses that assume the load generated by the concrete vault; the nave with the Pantocrator Dome and Steeple and the choir apses; the smaller volume of the sanctuary with the prothesis and the diaconicon. The use of the Golden Ratio for the dimensioning of facade bays, windows, blind niches and for the Pantocrator Steeple, introduce the human dimension next to the divine dimension of the building.

03. Vila I. Nistor

I. Nistor Villa
1935 Strada Dr. Anibal Theohari 17

Built a few years later than the rest of the villas signed by ANDREESCU HARET within the Cotroceni residential parks, the NISTOR residence on Dr. Teohari Street exhibits an austere Modernism, supported by a play with simple volumes. The frameless windows, brought together to resemble corner windows or the band window – symbol of Modernism, are the only elements that brake the monotony of the volumes. The entrance is flanked by two plain columns, reminiscent of Art Deco.
The villa is set in coherent urban texture made up of villas and small apartment buildings of Modernist or Art Deco styles (with Moorish Revival influences from place to place).

04. Vila Ing. Steinberg

Engineeer Steinberg Villa
1930 Strada Dr. Joseph Joseph Lister 31

Situated in the neighbourhood of the Elefterie park, the house belonged to the family of eng. Steinberg. Being at the origin a Neo-Romanian house, it has been strongly affected by recent rehabilitation which didn't preserve the original elements (window frames, partition of carpentry, balustrade, roof covering, chromatic). The composition is dominated by a tall volume recalling the Romanian "foişor". The voids of the façade decrease with height - on top being three small openings and a curved window sustained by the cornice in the central area of the facade. Actual profiles are over-simplified and information about original decoration has been lost. The main facade presents various registers in apparent brick but it is hard to estimate if this kind of surface is original. The house has been extended with a new garage. The only authentic element is the entrance, which is marked using a rectangular frame and a simple white cornice. The wooden entrance door, with windows protected by metal grills, divided in three parts, may also be original, as well as the custom to put a round exterior lamp above the entrance. The transparent enclosure made out of horizontal bars, on a masonry base, is typical for Cotroceni. Moreover, in the case of the house from Dr. Lister 31, the bars are covered with vegetation.

05. Vila Colonel Cezar Golici

Colonel Cezar Golici Villa
1928 Strada Dr. Mihail Obedenaru 16

Neo-Romanian house by excellence, presenting all the attributes of the style, the house at Dr. Mihail Obedenaru street, 16 shows the stateliness of a noble manor, moved to the beginning of the XXth century. It was constructed for the colonel Cezar Golici, in the same area located in the neighbourhood of the Elefterie Park. The house benefited of a recent restoration that has reconfirmed the value of the original constructive and decorative elements. The cylindrical corner tower, protected by a generous conical roof, is recurring element of the architects’ creation. Unlike the one from the house situated in Intrarea Spătarului 8, both levels of the tower are enclosed, creating a bow-window. The upper part of the corner tower, richly decorated, is cantilevered. The attic of the tower receives light through the concentric dormers of the conic roof. A large series of Neo-Romanian elements can be observed: the partially arched cornice, covering a wooden logia, the semi cylindrical covering sustained by wooden beams above one of the entrances, the high, richly decorated frame below the cornice, the main logia with trefoil arches, the main entrance through a low porch sustained by two thick columns. The enclosure is the original one, having a structure of concrete pillars and carved iron panels.

06. Vila Georgescu

Georgescu Villa
1930 Strada Dr. Louis Pasteur 41

The GEORGESCU residence has a massive sillhouette, dominated by the tall volume, on the left side of the entrance. Evidențiat și la nivelul acoperișului, only the  privileged volume was decorated with an ornamental cornice, with a hint of Art Deco. The villa has a sillhouette that would lead us to place it within the Neo Romanian style, but the ornaments are over-clensed and the large windows place the residence more firmly into contemporary times. The recent facade works make it very difficult to pin a particular architecural style to the building.
The symetrical, tower-like volume, detached by almost two meters from the rest of the facade, and a level higher than it, turns what is left of the facade into a background for itself.
The villa is very retreated from the street alignement, unusual for the Elefterie Residential Park, and is currently undergoing ample restorations.

07. Vila Profesor Popescu şi Iosif Gabrea

Professor Popescu and Iosif Gabrea Villa

The building shelters, in fact, two attached houses that don't adopt the classical "mirror" composition. The owners were professor Popescu and Iosif Gabrea. The house re-edits, in a more simple way, elements from the architectural vocabulary of its sophisticated neighbour on the same street (no. 16): the cylindrical tower with conical roof in the corner, the organisation of windows in packs of three, the entrance canopy solved as an independent roof sustained by a wooden structure. A beautiful characteristic of this house is the almost complete covering of the main north-western façade with hanging vegetation - a romantic "green wall", as we may call it today. In the recent rehabilitation of the house the original ceramic tiles of the roof have been lost. A special element is the relation with the garden, realised through a separate volume (bow-window) acceded by a semi-helicoidal stair covered with stone. Decoration is simpler than in the case of other individual houses conceived by the architect, consisting in rectangular frames around the windows and common pillars forming the balustrades.

08. Vila Radu şi Elena Perianu

Radu and Elena Perianu Villa
1932 Bulevardul Eroilor 18

The villa built for secondary professor Radu PERIANU (1886-1976) and his wife, Elena, is an able Art Deco exercise that elegantly exhibits a series of features of the style: clensed cornices and liner, bow-window with trapezoid-shaped plan, rounded balconies, balustres stylized to the shape of a cylinder and others.
The owner, historyan and editor at ‘Revista Istorică Română’ (Romanian Hystorical Journal), probably recognized the qualities of the contemporary design proporsed by ANDREESCU HARET and the happy circumstances (the house is not listed on the building nationalizing decree of April 20th 1952 and it was further inhabited by the PERIANU family) allowed the building to be kept in good condition and without inappropriate interventions. Upon examining this villa one can observe features that forego Modernism: although it does not have a terrace roof, the actual roof is hidden by a high parapet, thusly avoiding the use of overhangs, and on the first floor two windows are grouped together around the corner facing Bulevardul Eroilor, simulating a corner window, typical for the non-load-baring Modernist facade.

09. Centrul de Cercetări Antropologice al Universității de Medicină Carol Davila

The Anthropology Research Centre for the Carol Davila Medical University
1927 Bulevardul Eroii Sanitari 8

Virginia ANDREESCU HARET designed and built from 1924 untill 1927 three buildings for the Medical University: the water tower (later demolished), the heating plant (a technical building with an industrial architecture) and The Anthropology Research Center, all placed behind the main building of the Carol Davila Medical University – Beaux Arts creation of architect Louis BLANC (1860-1903).
The ‘clean’ volume of the Research Center building mainly exhibits industrial architecture features, with ample windows, a lack of decorations and a flattened roof, resembling a terrace roof. The only exceptions to the industrial rigor are the entrance apparatus and the cornice.  The entrance apparatus is added to the main volume of the research center and is an austere monumental solution for staff access.
Adjacent to one of the short facades is the old heating plant building and behind it stood the water tower with its’reinforced concrete structure. Between 1932 and 1939, behind these buildings the Bucharest Hygiene Institute is erected, a modernist work of architect Henrietta DELAVRANCEA-GIBORY (1897-1987).

10. Palatul Societăţii Tinerimea Română

The Palace for Tinerimea Română Society
1923-27 Strada Johann Guttenberg 19

The building, although designed in cooperation with architect Jean POMPILIAN (1872-1938), is one of the most significant for the work of the architect. This structure is also one of the earliest of Virginia ANDREESCU HARET’s creations, and the plans can be found within the National Archives in Calea Văcăreşti. It is listed as monument with the code LMI B-II-m-B-18891.
The construction work was conducted by architect Raul NEGRU and engineer Valer PALER. The palace is one of large dimensions - with ground floor, basement and 7 upper floors. The festivity hall is on the 1st floor, raising up to the 4th. These floors also contain the annexes and the administrative spaces of the institution. These four floors, although reflecting to the exterior the annex and administrative spaces through the distribution of windows, are marked as an ensemble in the facade, creating a common registry. The 5th and 6th floor form separate registries and the 7th floor marks the mansard register. The decoration style has a powerful classical resonance. The building has been undergoing a continuous restoration process since 1991.

Ensemble of villas for clerks of Casa de Depuneri și Consemnatțiuni
1929 Strada Theodor Burada 2-10

In an area situated in the vicinity of the Opera Plaza, and one of transition to the Cotroceni neighbourhood, the architect designed an ensemble of 7 villas with the typology of social housing. The villas have ground floor and upper floor, or ground floor, upper floor and attic, having pitched roofs. Noteworthy are the bow-window elements which decorate the facade, with marked cantilever supports, while the architecture employs curved elements both in the structure of the plan as well as for the before mentioned bow-window elements, thusly emphasizing the corner in different ways, depending on the position in the frame of the assembly, which is developed on concentrical streets, sometimes using symmetry for opposite and, respectively, coupled houses. The ensemble is completed by other villas, designed by other architects, which meet up the same specificity, sometimes covering even the entrance with a pitched roof canopy.

12. Vila Viorica și Gheorghe Rujinski

Gheorghe Rujinski Villa
1933 Strada Berzei 22

The villa designed for General RUJINSKI, leader of the 2nd Army Core, is comprised of a Modernist play on volumes with slight Art Deco brush strokes. The composition of the canopy-balcony and the vertical volume that houses the entrance is the main event of the two facades visible from the street. The rounding of the balcony slab and emphasizing it with the metal Streamline railing (as it must have been before the rcent facade interventions), together with the beveling of the corner of the building confirm that the Art Deco heritage that both architects and owners still carried. The cantilevering of the balcony over the sidewalk was more than likely a manifesto of the periods’ contemporaneity, just as the radio antenna was, treated as an ornament on the buildings of the 30’s.
The window groups are meant to simulate the corner and band windows of modern times, while the parapet in steps is reminiscent of Art Deco, still actual at that moment.

13. Depozit vinuri şi locuinţe Banca Viticolă

Wine warehouse and living quarters for Banca Viticolă

The building is situated in the Northern Train Station area. It has an L shaped plan, with the interior court opened towards the street. The building has a ground floor and two upper floors, with numerous parasites covering the ground floor. The second floor presents an interesting combination of timber elements, while the first floor is characterised by elements in typical Neo-Romanian style, with centered arches. The timber elements however differ from the typical Neo-Romanian and follow rather the constructive logics of a roof or of a half-timbered building (with diagonals). On the two sides of the building the dimensions of the windows differ.

14. Vila inginer Dumitru Stoica

Engineer Dumitru Stoica Villa
1937 Strada Veronica Micle 27

Conceived for the family of engineer Dumitru Stoica and located on the street formerly called Mihai Eminescu, the house is part of the Modernist creations of the architect. The cornice is decorated with a geometric pattern, of Art Deco influence, also used in the case of other dwellings conceived by the architect (as Intrarea Spătarului 8, in Neo-Romanian style). The vocabulary of the house deals with elements that can be generally found in other Modernist creations of the architect, such as the corner window, used as well in the ground floor and in the upper floor, the pack of three small windows above, the tall basement that expresses a high underground level, the protection of the entrance by a thin reinforced concrete canopy, the circular window in a ‘cruise liner’ style. The crossed intersection of two rectangular volumes at the upper level is characteristic for this house, as well as the balcony which ends with a rounded slab, with an iron railing, continued with another small balcony at the other side, on the same horizontal axis. A subtle curving of the main facade, in relation with the entrance and the protection covering may be observed.

15. Vila Dem. Iuraşcu

Dem. Iuraşcu Villa
1935 Strada Emanoil Porumbaru 24

The austere villa with a clean lines is composed by two different sized box-like volumes. The corner box exhibits on the main facade a composition of three volumes that protrude its’ skin, resembling outward drawers. The strongest volume is the one dedicated to the vestibule, extended almost in a telescopic manner through a thin canopy that announces the entrance. The front door, with a lacey metal work, comes into contrast with the sobre simplicity of the house through its’ complexity, working as a carefully studied detail, meant to place the building within the Art Deco style. The lighting fixture underneath the canopy, together with the two cleansed columns and the low gates contribute to the Art Deco atmosphere.

16. Vila Panait Mazilu

Panait Mazilu Villa
1935 Strada Popa Savu 76

The building is a Modernist one-storey villa, remarkable in the actual context of the street by the line of fir trees conceiving a natural curtain, that make its total perception difficult. The spirit of the '30s announces its presence within this creation of the architect, conceived for the owner engineer Panait MAZILU. Together with older elements present in the creation of the architect (organisation of windows in packs of three, the underlining of window frames and cornice) the specific details of avant-garde architecture appear: the organizing of facades through the proportion of openings, the elegance of simple volumes, the corner balcony with a massive parapet, the ‘cruise liner’ window. The entrance is protected by the balcony above, conceived in a zigzag form, that becomes a defining element for the general volume. The detail of the entrance stair is remarkable, with its curved steps and a thick pillar sustaining the balustrade. The corner window that allows the increasing of the amount of natural light that enters the house is present in the ground floor and in the upper one as well. A characteristic element of the house is the detail of the thin covering which is present above the balcony and the secondary entrance.

17. Vila Constanţa şi Ioan G. Haret

Constanţa and Ioan G. Haret Villa
1942 Strada Jean Texier 7

Although the degree of kin between engineer HARET, Virginia ANDREESCU HARET’s husband and Ioan G. HARET is not known to us, the kinship existed, for the name could not have been a mere coincidence. We find this relevant, because it means that, just as when she designs her own residence on Bulevardul Lascăr Catargiu, here she also chooses a Modernist architectural expression (even though for her own home Art Deco carries a greater weight for the esthetics of the facades). In both cases she had the freedom to design the way she wanted and she chose the contemporary expression of Modernism.
In the case of the villa on Jean Texier Street the main element is the outlined intention to continue the bands of the window parapets through the shape of the two balconies directly above the entrance, thusly speculating the horizontal direction (usually emphasised by band windows) on a otherwise vertical facade. The war years throughout which this building was erected took their toll on the villa, making it one of the most austere works of the architect. It is interesting how the architectural expression can work as a barometer of the state of peace-war, plenty-scarcity.

18. Vila I. Constantinescu

I. Constantinescu Villa
1936 Intrarea Bitolia 11

The house, situated in the northern Modernist residential parks, close to Dorobanţi Square, is close to numerous protected areas. The house itself is of Modernist style, with a ground floor, upper floor and high basement, with balconies and bow-window, typical for the period. The windows give the impression of a band-window going around the corner, with a marked pillar. The houses of Virginia ANDREESCU HARET have their own history, here ‘lived and created music from 1981 to 1990 the professor Grigore Nica (1936-2009), member of the Union of Critics, Editors and Music Producers „Mihai Jora” of Romania’ (Commemorative plaque).

19. Vilele Papiniu

Papiniu Villas
1925 Strada Roma 54-56

Actually two adjacent symmetrical buildings, the PAPINIU villas are dominated by the two symmetrical bow-windows that actually only house two loggias, no enclosed spaces. These two bow-windows lend, through their rich decorations, a Neo-Romanian atmosphere to the entire ensemble, which could otherwise be considered sober. The cartouches and pierced tracery panels decorated with floral motifs could even make us think of the Art Nouveau origins of the Neo-Romanian style, but the proportions of the columns and the shape of the first floor arches bring us back to the local national style.
The symmetry axis generated by the joining of the villas is emphasized by the square the two bow-windows define, which confirm the creation of a visual center of the main facade.

20. Vila Inginer I. Catuniari

Engineer I. Catuniari Villa
1920’ Strada Washington 30

Presently undergoing a restoration process, the villa at number 30 on Washington Street is an exercise of Neo-Romanian architecture, which stands out due to the apparent masonry arches and frieze.  The morfological elements that define this building, like the corner with three column arches on one side and one on  the other, the powerful corner buttresses on the groundfloor, the terrace on the first floor and others, can be found within other works of the architect, but the texture contrast (rendering vs. masonry) is an experiment for Virginia ANDREESCU HARET. Out of the works that we have identified in Bucharest, she only used apparent masonry on the facades of the Dimitrie Cantemir High School.
In order to moderate the composition of the facades, the architect did not use the ornate capital that we can see at the STĂNESCU and LUPU villas, but she used Doric capitals, although of Neo-Romanian proportions.
As with many of the architects’ creations, here to is interesting to follow the study of facade proportions, for example the Golden Ratio first floor windows, their parapets within the same ratio and others.

21. Vila Nicu Stănescu

Nicu Stănescu Villa
1923 Strada Paris 43

The house located at 43 Paris Street was built in Neo-Romanian style, but with austere decoration, for lawyer Nicu STĂNESCU, in the neighbourhood of the ‘Bonaparte park. The residence is a volume that resulted from the intersection between an L-shaped volume and a ground-floor volume that is in fact a loggia enclosed with trefoil arches and covered by a terrace which is accessible from the upper floor. Recent restoration kept various original elements of the surface of the facades: the decoration of window frames, of the cornice and of the parapet of the openings from the upper floor, the canopy supported by a wooden decorated structure, the two wooden semi-cylindrical canopies on the eastern facade. However, decoration seems to have been simplified after restoration. The metal railing of the first floor terrace is not original and the form of the arches seems to have been modified. The present enclosure keeps the characteristics of the original one: tall concrete pillars covered in ceramic tile and wooden panels with orthogonal patterns sustained above a tall basement. The courtyard has two entrances at each extremity of the plot, the main one being marked by a distinctive gate. In the back of the plot there is an annex of the house, also built in Neo-Romanian style.
